Why the fee exists
A mobile trade's first cost is putting a stocked van and a licensed tech at your address — fuel, time, insurance, inventory. The service call fee covers arrival and diagnosis; the labor and parts price the actual work.
The honest structure
Legitimate shops state the call fee, state what it includes, and roll it visibly into the quoted total. You should hear one out-the-door number on the phone — fee, labor, parts, tax — before anyone dispatches.
The dishonest structure
The scam inversion: a tiny advertised 'service fee' presented as if it were the price, with the real charges invented on-site. Any quote where the components can't be named on the phone is a quote designed to grow.
After-hours and distance premiums
Night, weekend, holiday, and far-address premiums are normal — and stateable. 'It costs more at 2 AM' is honest; 'the tech will tell you there' is not.
