How rekey pricing is built
Rekeying prices as a service call plus per-cylinder work: each keyed cylinder on each door gets new pins to a fresh key. More doors, more cylinders, gently more cost — it scales far better than buying hardware.
What raises the per-cylinder work
High-security and restricted keyways, corroded coastal cylinders that fight disassembly, mixed brands that need cylinder swaps to key alike, and locks that were 'creatively' installed. Ordinary residential cylinders are the baseline.
Keyed-alike convenience
Getting every door onto one key is usually modest additional work at rekey time and dramatically underrated as quality-of-life. Ask for it while the locksmith is already there.
Rekey vs. replace, cost-wise
Sound hardware plus outstanding-key worry: rekey. Worn or low-grade hardware: replacement may be the better spend even at higher upfront cost. An honest tech will tell you which side of the line each door sits on.
Getting a real number
Count your exterior doors and what's on each (knob, deadbolt, both), mention any smart or high-security hardware, and any pro can quote the whole house on one phone call — firmly.
